The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) is a research project at Uppsala University in Sweden. It records each deadly event of organised violence, with a place, a date, who was involved and how many people died. It is free to use.
Each circle is a small area where fighting was recorded in the last 12 months. A bigger circle means more recorded deaths. Red is a government fighting, amber is armed groups fighting each other, and purple is attacks on civilians.
Only deaths that were reported and confirmed are counted, so real numbers are often higher. The newest months are preliminary and can change. The data is copied from time to time, not live, and the date is shown on the page.
The plain explanations are short summaries written from public news reporting. They try to stay neutral, and they can go out of date. Who is “at war” is often disputed, and this map takes no side.
